Kara Found More Than 20 Clams from the Bay
“Grandpa, are you going for climbing tomorrow?” Climing a mountain or a hill? “Sure,” said I. This morning everybody was getting ready for climing but with swimming suits and towels. I said, “Where are you going?” Climing! No, it wasn’t climing. It was clamming. I got it wrong. We went to a store and bought three licenses for clamming, and rented two rakes for $42.00. On the quiet beach with a nice weather, not too hot, not too cold, just a little sweet breeze, a perfect weather, we set up a beach umbrella for home and everybody went into the water for clamming with your toes and heels and rakes. They went in pretty far into the water but only knee deep. Surprising, no such a place in Korea. If this were Korea, probably a sea of people instead of a sea of water. Wanho was the first to find a claim or two, shouting for joy, but it was Kara who got more than 20 clams. Everybody got something and I got four of them, pretty big sizes. It was fun. All enjoyed clamming for a few hours, a sandwitch. Tonight we are looking forward to a clam dinner. Back home, in our shower we heard someone there already ahead of us. It was Ezme 5 years old, who got there first taking a shower by herself. Wow, well trained. Grandma and I both were impressed with her.
“빈라덴이 싫어요”… 이슬람 지배지역서 이탈현상
강압적 통치 방식과 극단주의에 대한 반발 확산 [2008-04-15 07:09]
지난 수 년간 이슬람 정권이 지배해 오거나 이슬람과 타 세력 간 분쟁이 계속되어 온 지역들에서 이슬람 이탈 현상(개종)이 뚜렷해지고 있다고 미국 언론인들이 운영하는 보수 신문 파자마스미디어(PJM)가 최근 보도했다.
사우디아라비아의 저명한 이슬람 학자인 아흐메드 알 카타아니는 최근 알 자지라 방송과의 인터뷰에서 역사적으로 이슬람의 강력한 영향력 아래 있었던 아프리카에서의 무슬림 인구 변화를 설명했다.
그에 따르면 아프리카의 무슬림 인구는 2006년에 총 10억여 전체 인구 가운데 3억1천6백만여명 정도로 아프리카 아랍계 인구의 절반에도 못 미치는 숫자였다. 이는 지난 세기 초에 비교했을 때 급격한 감소라고 그는 말했다. 반면 아프리카에서 가톨릭 인구의 수는 한 세기 동안 1백만에서 3억3천만명으로 증가했다.
알 카타아니는 이슬람 정권의 독재, 부패, 극단주의 테러 등에 대한 반감을 이같은 변화의 원인으로 꼽았다. 그에 따르면 이슬람 정권이 집권하고 있는 지역들에서는 최근 수 년간 이와 유사한 현상이 나타나고 있다.
이란에서는 1830년부터 1979년까지 149년간 개종한 무슬림들의 수가 3천여명에 불과했지만, 지난 5년 사이에 1백만명이 개종했다. 이 지역에서 사역하고 있는 호르모즈 샤리아트 목사는 개종자들이 이슬람을 버린 이유는 이란 정부 때문이라고 말했다. 이들은 독재적이고 부패한 이란 정부와 이슬람을 동일시한다는 것이다.
하마스 집권과 함께 이슬람 극단주의가 강세를 보이고 있는 팔레스타인에서도 비밀스런 개종이 적지 않게 일어나고 있다. 한 선교사는 “이 곳에서 30년간 사역해 왔지만, 예전에는 이런 일이 한 번도 없었다”고 말했다.
러시아 종교간위원회 로만 실란트예브 사무총장에 따르면, 2004년 베슬란 테러(체첸 반군의 초등학교 점령 사태로 1천명 이상의 희생자가 발생) 이후 러시아 남부 지역에서 2백만여명의 무슬림들이 기독교로 개종했다.
60여 년간 지속된 카슈미르 분쟁은 이 지역에서 이슬람 극단주의에 대한 반발을 가져왔고 비밀스럽게 개종하는 이들이 나타났다. 이 곳에서 기독교로 개종했다는 한 교인은 “나는 폭력이 싫고 이슬람 극단주의자들이 싫다. 나는 이 곳(교회)에 평화를 찾아 온다”고 말했다.
이슬람 극단주의의 실패 역시 이슬람으로부터의 이탈을 낳고 있다. 1998년 ABC와의 인터뷰에서 알 카에다의 최고 지도자 오사마 빈 라덴은 지하드 전사들의 승리를 알라가 결정지었다고 말했다. 그러나 알 카에다의 지난 10년간 전쟁 이후, 오늘날 이라크의 젊은이들은 이슬람에 대한 회의를 품고 있다.
최근 뉴욕타임즈는 이라크 청년 40명을 인터뷰했고, 그들이 더 이상 “이슬람에 관심이 없다”는 결론을 얻었다. 이 인터뷰에서 19세의 이라크 소년은 “성직자들은 거짓말쟁이들이다. 젊은 사람들은 그들을 믿지 않는다”고 말했다. 24세 여성은 “나는 오사마 빈 라덴을 추앙했다. 그러나 지금은 싫다. 알 카에다는 증오를 퍼뜨리고 있다. 사람들이 아무 이유 없이 죽어가고 있다”고 분개했다. 바그다드의 한 법학 교수는 자신의 제자들이 “성직자들을 미워하기 시작했다”고 밝혔다.
이슬람 극단주의자들의 현실에서의 패배는 알라가 자신에게 충실한 자에게 상을 준다는 이슬람의 가르침에 문제를 제기하게 만들었고, 그 결과 더 이상 무슬림들은 이슬람에 대한 ‘굴종’을 원하지 않게 됐다고 신문은 분석했다. 그 결과 이슬람 체제를 유지하고 강화하려는 이슬람주의자들의 노력은 반대로 무슬림들의 반발과 이탈이라는 역효과로 이어지고 있다는 것이다.

I See the Best Person

Driving out to an icecream shop, Seth and David got into some kind of argument with each other in the back seat. Seth said somethig like, “I see the worst person.” Immediately Ezme who was sitting right next to Seth, spoke up, “I see the best person.” Wow! The twosome argument went on. No one
caught the conversation but me. Ezme reminded me of Grace years ago when she was perhaps five or six at Mr. Jung’s two story house, where some ten of his Korean friends were invited with their children. Children were going up and down the stairs talking and screaming in a group. While the adults were watching them going up the stairs, Grace was the last at the bottom. Mr. Jung’s daughter looking down on Grace, angrily in a loud voice which all the adults heard, said, “I don’t like you.” Grace innocently looking up to her, “But I like you.” All who heard her, were jolted by her response. The girl, still looking at Grace, lost her words, looking blank in her eyes, didn’t know what to say, how to respond and stood there on the steps as if she lost all the strength. All looking at the scene were touched by the power of good over evil.

Vacationing in Delaware

I’m with my family in DE beach. All three daughters and their families are with us. It’s been three years since we were together. Family is heaven on earth. Nothing is as good as being with your own family. Jimmy, Christine’s huband was with us only for one day due to his responsibility at work. I arrived at New York and was picked up by Christine and Jimmy at night. I stayed one night with them and Jimmy he drove six hours from New York one way to take us to down here and another six hours back to New York. Much grateful to Jimmy. Christine and Jimmy still look like just married. Grace’s family arrived from Chicago on Sunday afternoon, driving all the way down here for some 14 hours, staying over one night in Indiana. The last leg of their driving was delayed for hours due to a big truck which jumped the Bay Bridge, Marylanbd and plunged into the sea and the driver drowned. The sea of vacationing cars had to use only one lane to pass through. Grace called to inform us that they moved one mile for a hours. Grace’s was late so Jimmy had to leave before their arrival. Thirteen of us except Jimmy are staying together in one big rented house in a very nice fenced vacation village, which has six spacious bed rooms, just right kind for our families. All six grand children have grown much, especially Kara looking strong and tall. Everybody looks good. So far two afternoons on Rehoboth beach and one at the water park for a lot of fun. Christine had to avoid sunlight due to her skin problem. The Beijing Olympics are going on and Korea so far is the third next to China and USA with 12 medals.
